The Regional Energy Agency of Crete was founded in December 1993 by the Region of Crete. The areas of excellence of the Agency are: Energy, Environment,
Renewable Energy Sources, Energy Saving and Rational Use of Energy and European and International Co-operation.
The main objectives of the Regional Energy Agency of Crete are:
To contribute to the formation of the Regional Energy Policy, in close co-operation with all the responsible bodies
To co-ordinate the energy program and activities of several regional and local bodies, to combine them with other Community or National program
To participate in European and National energy program and networks. To promote European and international co-operation.
To provide consultancy services to interested bodies.
To promote programmes, technologies and applications of renewable energy sources, rational use of energy, etc.
To realize training program, seminars, technical visits, conferences, etc.
To sensitize citizen consumers and energy users.
The Regional Energy Agency of Crete has achieved very important results, since its creation:
An energy strategy and policy for the Region of Crete has been elaborated and promoted (adopted unanimously by the Regional Council).
An Action and Implementation plan for the wide introduction of Renewable Energy sources in the energy system of Crete has been elaborated and promoted.

36 European competitive projects have been (or are) realized.
The Regional Energy Agency of Crete participates actively in many National and European networks.
Many meetings, workshops and conferences have been organized all around Crete and in mainland.
Educational activities have been developed, Editions have been realized (proceedings of workshops etc.) and Databases have been created.
The Regional Energy Agency of Crete is an official European partner of the Campaign for Take-off of Renewable Energy Sources in Europe.
In 2001, the Region of Crete and its Regional Energy Agency have been honored by the European Commission with the first award for the Best Regional Renewable Energy Partnership (in the framework of 2001 Campaign for Take-off Awards), for the existing RES plants in Crete and their successful integrated programme "Large Scale Deployment of Renewable Energy Sources in Crete".
